A French drain is a buried perforated pipe surrounded by gravel that collects groundwater and subsurface runoff along its entire length. It works best when you have a broad area of soggy lawn, a slope that saturates, or a low spot that stays wet because water is seeping up from below.

A catch basin is a surface inlet box, essentially a grated underground bucket, that captures large volumes of water pooling at a specific point, like the low end of a driveway, a backyard depression, or the base of a slope. It connects to a solid outlet pipe that carries the collected water to a discharge point.

Many properties need both. A French drain handles diffuse subsurface moisture while a catch basin handles concentrated surface flows. Getting the combination right is part of why an on-site assessment matters so much.

The most obvious interior signs are water stains on basement floors or walls, a persistent musty odor after rain events, white chalky deposits (efflorescence) forming on concrete block or poured concrete walls, or actual puddles or seepage appearing after storms.

Outside, if water consistently pools within about six feet of your foundation, or if your grade slopes toward the house rather than away from it, your foundation is being exposed to pressure and saturation even if you have not seen interior moisture yet. By the time you see water inside, the process has often been underway for some time.

There will be some disruption because we need to excavate to install pipe at the right depth and grade. That said, a skilled crew minimizes the footprint of the work, protects nearby plantings, and restores lawn areas with topsoil and seeding or sod after installation.

In most cases, the drainage system becomes an improvement to your landscape. A dry creek bed manages stormwater runoff while adding a natural-looking feature to the yard. Rain gardens planted with native species can handle concentrated runoff from downspouts while requiring almost no maintenance once established.

Yes, significantly. Connecticut sits on glacial till and dense clay-loam soils left behind by the last ice age. Clay absorbs water slowly and drains even more slowly, which means a rainfall event that would drain quickly in sandy soil will saturate the ground here and stay that way for days.

This affects drainage design in important ways. Outlet selection matters enormously because water collected by your system needs somewhere to go that can actually receive it. Pipe bedding and trench backfill need to create an artificial drainage pathway, since the surrounding native soil will not absorb excess water quickly.
